5 Signs Your AC Is Oversized

Home/Blog/5 Signs Your AC Is Oversized
One of the most common HVAC mistakes in Utah homes is an oversized air conditioner. Many contractors use "rule of thumb" sizing instead of performing a proper Manual J load calculation, which leads to equipment that’s too large for the space it’s cooling.

1. Short Cycling
—Your AC turns on, cools the air near the thermostat quickly, then shuts off before the rest of the house catches up. This rapid on/off cycling wears out the compressor, the most expensive component in your system. A properly sized unit runs longer, gentler cycles that distribute air evenly.

2. High Humidity Despite Cool Temperatures—An oversized AC cools the air so fast that it never runs long enough to remove moisture. In Utah’s dry climate this is less noticeable, but during monsoon season (July–September) you’ll feel clammy even when the thermostat reads
72°F.

3. Uneven Temperatures Room to Room
—Rooms closest to the air handler get blasted with cold air while bedrooms at the end of duct runs stay warm. This is because the oversized unit pushes too much air too fast, creating pressure imbalances in your ductwork.

4. Higher Energy Bills Than Expected—Short cycling means your compressor starts and stops repeatedly, and startup is the most energy-intensive part of the cooling cycle. A right-sized unit running steady cycles is significantly more efficient than an oversized unit that’s constantly starting up.

5. Your system is less than 15 years old but already failing—compressors, contactors, and capacitors wear out faster when the system short-cycles. If your relatively new system needs frequent repairs, oversizing may be the root cause.

The Fix:
The only way to properly size an AC system is a Manual J load calculation, which accounts for your home’s insulation, windows, orientation, square footage, and local climate data. At Your Service Pros performs a Manual J on every installation—because the right equipment in the right size outperforms a premium brand that’s the wrong size.

If you suspect your AC is oversized, start with our free HVAC guide to learn more about proper sizing, then schedule a diagnostic visit. We’ll measure your system’s actual performance and let you know your options.
