A reverse osmosis (RO) system is the most effective way to purify your drinking water at home. RO membranes remove 95-99% of dissolved contaminants including lead, arsenic, PFAS (forever chemicals), chlorine byproducts, nitrates, and dissolved solids that water softeners can't address.
The Details
What You Need to Know
RO works by forcing water through a semi-permeable membrane with pores so small that only water molecules pass through. Contaminants, heavy metals, and dissolved solids are flushed to the drain. A typical under-sink RO system produces 50-100 gallons per day — more than enough for drinking and cooking.
We install NSF 58-certified systems that have been independently tested and verified to remove specific contaminants. The certification matters because not all RO systems perform equally. We also install systems with remineralization filters that add beneficial minerals back after purification for better taste.
Utah's tap water contains high levels of TDS (300-500 PPM in most areas), chlorine/chloramine for disinfection, and in some areas, elevated levels of nitrates and industrial contaminants. RO reduces TDS to 10-30 PPM and removes virtually all chemical contaminants.

How it works
Inside a multi-stage RO system
Utah tap water carries hardness, chlorine by-products, sediment, and — in some zip codes — PFAS and lead. A properly built reverse-osmosis system strips all of that out in discrete stages, then stores clean water ready to drink. Here's the path your water actually takes before it reaches your glass.

Schematic of a typical under-sink RO — pre-filtration protects the membrane, the membrane strips dissolved contaminants, the post-filter polishes taste.
- 1
Feed water from cold water supply
Cold water taps off your kitchen supply line and feeds the system at standard household pressure (60-80 PSI).
- 2
Stage 3 - Carbon block
A pressed-carbon block scrubs chlorine, chloramines, and organic taste/odor. Chlorine alone destroys RO membranes - this stage is non-negotiable.
- 3
Stage 2 - Pre-carbon filter
Granular activated carbon catches lingering chlorine by-products and softens any chemical taste before the membrane.
- 4
Stage 1 - Sediment pre-filter
A 5-micron wound filter catches rust, silt, and sand before they can pit the membrane. Protects every stage downstream.
- 5
Flow restrictor / drain line
Reject water (carrying the rejected contaminants) flows to the drain through a calibrated restrictor that maintains the right back-pressure on the membrane.
- 6
ASO (automatic shut-off) valve
Senses when the storage tank is full and shuts off water flow to the membrane - no wasted water, no over-pressurizing.
- 7
RO membrane housing (in / out)
Water is pushed through the semi-permeable membrane. Lead, PFAS, nitrates, arsenic, fluoride, and 95-99% of total dissolved solids stay on the reject side; clean permeate exits.
- 8
Pressurized storage tank
Clean permeate collects in a bladder tank so you get a steady flow at the faucet - no waiting on the membrane to keep up with you.
- 9
Stage 5 - Post-carbon polish
A final carbon polish scrubs any residual taste picked up in storage, so the last thing your water touches is fresh carbon.
- 10
Dedicated faucet
An air-gap faucet at the kitchen sink delivers RO water straight to your glass - separate from the main tap so your softener and main supply stay independent.
