Heat Pump Installation Cost in Utah (2026)
Real installed pricing for cold-climate heat pumps across the Wasatch Front. How the IRA + HEEHRA + Rocky Mountain Power rebates stack to bring net cost down to $4,000–$7,000.
Typical installed price range
Real installed prices we quote across the Wasatch Front in 2026. Includes labor, parts, permit, and inspection. Net cost after rebates is usually lower — see the rebate stack below.
Net out of pocket for income-qualified Utah households. We file the paperwork.

Rebates & tax credits that apply
These are independent programs that can stack on the same install. We file Rocky Mountain Power and HEEHRA on your behalf; you claim the IRA credit on your taxes (we provide the AHRI certificate).
HEEHRA point-of-sale rebate
Below 80% AMI; up to $4,000 at 80–150% AMI

Real price breakdown
These are the actual installed price ranges we quote in 2026 by tier. Pick the row closest to your situation, then read the “what changes the number” section below to see why your quote may land on the higher or lower end.
| Configuration | Installed |
|---|---|
2.5-ton, HSPF2 8.5 single-stage cold-climate | $9,800–$12,200 |
3-ton, HSPF2 9.0 two-stage cold-climate Most common Utah job | $11,800–$14,400 |
4-ton, HSPF2 9.5 variable-speed | $13,500–$16,500 |
5-ton, HSPF2 10 variable-speed | $15,200–$18,400 |
Variables
What changes the number
These are the specific factors that move your quote up or down within the range above. Knowing them lets you compare quotes apples-to-apples instead of guessing.
Heat pump tonnage
$1,200/ton stepSized via Manual J. Most Utah homes need 2.5–4 tons of cold-climate heat pump.
Cold-climate spec (HSPF2 rating)
+$800–$2,400Standard HSPF2 8.1 vs. cold-climate HSPF2 9.0+ vs. extreme cold-climate HSPF2 10+. Higher tiers maintain capacity at 5°F vs. dropping off at 30°F. Critical in Utah for sub-zero overnights.
Single-stage vs. variable-speed
+$1,200–$2,800Variable-speed inverter heat pumps modulate continuously to match load — quieter, more efficient, better humidity control. Single-stage is cheaper but less comfortable.
Backup heat strategy
Varies — see /cost/full-system-replacementDual-fuel (heat pump + existing or new gas furnace backup) costs more but handles -10°F nights gracefully. Heat-pump-only with electric resistance backup is cheaper but uses 3× more electricity below 5°F.
Scope
What's included vs. extra
Compare this list against any other Utah quote you receive — line items hidden in one quote and itemized in another are how the same job ends up “cheaper” on paper but more expensive after add-ons.
Included in our quote
- Manual J load calculation + climate-zone sizing
- ENERGY STAR Most Efficient cold-climate heat pump
- Matched indoor air handler
- Refrigerant lineset (sized for cold-climate operation)
- 240V dedicated circuit + outdoor disconnect
- Smart thermostat with heat-pump optimization
- Permit + inspection
- AHRI-certified system commissioning
- 12-year parts warranty (most ENERGY STAR Most Efficient models)
- 1-year labor warranty
Not included (may be extra)
- Backup gas furnace (for dual-fuel — see /cost/full-system-replacement)
- Electrical panel upgrade if existing panel can't handle 240V dedicated circuit
- Removal of old AC condenser pad (we recycle if reusable)
- Ductwork modifications (rare; covered by Manual D check)
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Will a heat pump actually work in Utah winters?
+
Cold-climate models with HSPF2 9.0+ rated capacity at 5°F handle most Utah winters fine. Below 5°F (which happens 5–15 nights/year on the Wasatch Front), efficiency drops and capacity may be insufficient on its own. Dual-fuel (heat pump + gas furnace backup) is what we install on most Utah homes for this reason.
What's the HEEHRA income cutoff?
+
Utah's HEEHRA program tiers by Area Median Income (AMI). Below 80% AMI gets up to $8,000 point-of-sale rebate. 80–150% AMI gets up to $4,000. Above 150% AMI is not eligible for HEEHRA but still gets the $2,000 IRA credit + RMP rebate. We file the HEEHRA paperwork on your behalf when you qualify.
Can I use my existing AC ductwork for a heat pump?
+
Almost always yes. Heat pumps need slightly higher airflow than AC at design conditions, so we run a Manual D check on existing ducts. About 10% of Utah homes need duct modifications to support a heat pump's airflow. We catch this on the quote, not after install.
