Variables
What changes the number
These are the specific factors that move your quote up or down within the range above. Knowing them lets you compare quotes apples-to-apples instead of guessing.
AC tonnage (system size)
$800/ton stepSized via Manual J. Most Utah homes need 2–4 tons. Larger ≠ better — oversizing short-cycles and shortens equipment life.
SEER2 efficiency tier
+$400–$2,40014.3 SEER2 is current Utah-region minimum. 16, 18, 20+ SEER2 cost more upfront but qualify for higher rebates.
Refrigerant type
+$200–$600R-410A is current standard. R-32 (next generation) is rolling out in 2026 — slightly higher install cost but higher SEER2 ceilings.
Existing equipment compatibility
+$1,800–$5,200 if also replacing indoorIf you're replacing only the AC and the indoor coil/furnace are 10+ years old or mismatched, we strongly recommend matched system replacement instead. AHRI ratings only apply when the indoor + outdoor are matched.
Lineset condition
+$400–$1,200If existing copper lineset is over 15 years old, was on R-22, or is undersized for the new tonnage, we replace it.
Outdoor unit access
+$200–$800Standard side-yard pad install: included. Rooftop, basement-window-well, or tight-access rear yard installs add labor.
Scope
What's included vs. extra
Compare this list against any other Utah quote you receive — line items hidden in one quote and itemized in another are how the same job ends up “cheaper” on paper but more expensive after add-ons.
Included in our quote
- Manual J load calculation (room-by-room)
- AHRI-certified AC condenser + matching evaporator coil
- New refrigerant lineset or pressure-tested existing
- Concrete or composite condenser pad
- New 240V whip + outdoor disconnect
- City permit + inspection
- Post-install verification: superheat/subcooling, static pressure, temperature split
- 10-year parts warranty (registered with manufacturer)
- 1-year labor warranty (we cover any callback related to install)
Not included (may be extra)
- Ductwork modifications (only if Manual D shows existing ducts can't carry the new airflow)
- Indoor air handler / furnace replacement (if mismatched)
- Electrical panel upgrade (only if existing panel lacks capacity)
- Asbestos abatement if old plenum has it
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Why is the same AC cheaper online than installed?
+
An online price is the bare condenser. Installed pricing covers the matched evaporator coil, refrigerant lineset, electrical work, concrete pad, permit, inspection, AHRI-rated commissioning, and warranty registration. The condenser is roughly 35–45% of the total install cost.
Can I just replace the outdoor AC without touching the indoor furnace?
+
Sometimes. If the indoor evaporator coil is the same refrigerant type (R-410A) and rated for the new outdoor tonnage, yes. If your indoor unit is older than 10 years, on R-22, or rated for a different tonnage, AHRI matching breaks and the warranty is voided. We test compatibility on every quote before recommending partial-system replacement.
How long does AC replacement take in Utah?
+
A standard AC-only replacement takes 4–6 hours. A full system replacement (AC + furnace + coil) takes a full day. We pull the city permit ahead of the install and schedule the city inspection same day or next morning.
How much will the IRA tax credit and RMP rebate save me?
+
Most Utah jobs stack the IRA Section 25C credit ($300–$600 for AC alone) plus a Rocky Mountain Power Wattsmart rebate ($300–$800 depending on SEER2 tier). On a typical $8,000 install, expect $700–$1,400 of incentives. The IRA credit is claimed on your tax return; the RMP rebate posts to your power bill within 60 days.
