An HVAC contactor is an electrically-controlled switch inside your outdoor AC unit — when the thermostat calls for cooling, low-voltage signal closes the contactor and sends 240V to the compressor and fan.

Full Definition
A contactor is a heavy-duty electromechanical relay rated for the high-amperage loads of an HVAC compressor and condenser fan. The 24V coil receives the thermostat's call-for-cool signal; the coil's magnetic field pulls the silver-plated contacts closed, completing the 240V power circuit to the compressor. Contactors wear over thousands of cycles — points pit, springs weaken, and ants and dirt foul the gap.
Failed or fouled contactors are a very common AC failure in Utah — symptoms include AC won't turn on, AC won't turn off, buzzing from the condenser, or visible burning on the contact points. Replacement runs $239–$329 and pairs well with capacitor replacement.

Why do ants love HVAC contactors?
The low-voltage coil emits a small electromagnetic field that ants (especially Utah harvester ants) seem to follow. They crawl into the contactor body, get killed by the high voltage, and their bodies prevent the contacts from closing. Cleaning out the contactor is a common service call.
How long does an AC contactor last?
Typical service life is 8–15 years. They wear faster in coastal/dusty environments and faster on undersized AC systems that short-cycle.
