Burning Smell from an Outlet? Stop Reading and Act
A burning smell from any outlet is the closest thing to a literal smoke alarm in residential electrical. Here's exactly what to do in the next 10 minutes.
Burning insulation, hot plastic, or fishy smell from an outlet means current is arcing or wires are overheating behind the wall. This is the closest residential electrical equivalent of an active smoke alarm. Do these 5 things in this order.
Diagnostic
Most likely causes (in order)
Walk through the list top-to-bottom. The first cause matches roughly half of cases we see in Utah; if it doesn't fit your symptoms, move to the next.
Arcing connection inside outlet box
Loose wire (often backstabbed connection failed). Arc heats wire insulation. Burning fish smell = melting PVC. Could ignite within minutes to hours.
Overloaded receptacle
Too many high-draw devices on one outlet (space heater + power strip + hair dryer). Internal contacts overheat. Plastic body softens.
Aluminum wiring connection failure
1965–1972 Utah homes. Aluminum-to-copper connection oxidizes, creates high resistance, generates heat at the connection. Major fire risk.
Damaged appliance cord
Frayed cord, internal short. Smell may be from the cord/plug, not the outlet itself. Easier fix.
DIY first
Safe checks you can do today
Each step is labeled by safety level. Stop at any “Pro only” step — that's where the diagnostic crosses into work that needs gauges, multimeters, or live electrical access.
Unplug everything from the outlet immediately
CautionDon't touch the outlet face. Pull cords out by the plug only. If outlet is hot to the touch, skip and go to step 2.
Trip the breaker for that circuit
Safe DIYFind the breaker in your panel that controls that outlet. Push fully OFF. Confirms power is removed.
Do NOT use the outlet again until inspected
Safe DIYNo 'just for a minute' usage. The condition that caused the smell hasn't gone away.
Call us same day
Pro onlyBurning smell from an outlet is always same-day priority. We diagnose the cause (open the box, test the wires, check for heat damage).
If you see smoke or hear active arcing — call 911 first
Pro onlyActive fire risk. Fire department first; we'll come after to do permanent repair.
Stop and call

- Always — burning smell is never a wait-and-see issue
- Visible smoke = fire department first, then us
- Outlet face is hot or discolored = same-day call
- Aluminum wiring home + any burning smell = whole-house antioxidant connection inspection needed

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Could it just be the smell of a new appliance?
+
Some new appliances do have an off-gas smell for the first 5–10 minutes (ovens, space heaters). But it should go away. Persistent smell = active electrical issue. When in doubt, call.
