A whole-home generator automatically detects a power outage and switches your home to backup power in seconds — no manual startup, no extension cords, no worrying about losing food or comfort. Generac and Kohler systems are the industry leaders, offering 15-30 kW capacity that powers your entire home during extended outages.

The Details

What You Need to Know

Whole-home generators run on natural gas (if your home has gas service) or propane (stored in a tank on your property). Natural gas generators are convenient — no refueling needed. Propane systems offer independence from utility lines and are ideal for homes without gas service. Both systems automatically switch on loss of power within seconds.

An automatic transfer switch is the critical component. When utility power is lost, the transfer switch automatically disconnects your home from the grid and connects to the generator. When power is restored, it automatically switches back. This happens seamlessly without interrupting your work or devices.

A 15 kW generator powers essential loads (heating, water heater, refrigerator, lights, well pump if applicable). A 20-22 kW system adds air conditioning and most other loads. A 30+ kW system powers everything. We size the generator based on your home's peak load and essential circuits during an outage.

Got Questions?

Generator Installation FAQ

?How much does a whole-home generator cost?
Equipment cost: $6,000-$12,000 depending on capacity. Installation (fuel line, transfer switch, electrical): $3,000-$6,000. Total installed: $9,000-$18,000.
?What's the difference between natural gas and propane generators?
Natural gas generators run on your home's existing gas line — convenient and no refueling needed. Propane generators store fuel in a tank — ideal if you don't have gas service or want independence. Both operate identically with automatic transfer switches.
?How long does a generator installation take?
Typically 1-3 days depending on installation complexity. Natural gas systems are faster (tap existing line). Propane systems take longer if a new tank needs to be installed.
?How often do I need to maintain my generator?
Annual maintenance: oil and filter changes, fuel system inspection, and a test run under load. We can set up a maintenance plan.
?What size generator do I need?
Depends on your home. A 15 kW system powers essential loads. 20-22 kW adds air conditioning. 30+ kW powers almost everything. We calculate the right size after analyzing your home's load.
