What is MERV Rating?
Plain-English explanation from a licensed Utah HVAC, plumbing, and electrical contractor.
MERV is the air-filter rating system — higher MERV catches smaller particles (better filtration) but also restricts airflow more, which can strain your HVAC system if you go too high without sizing the filter housing properly.

Full Definition
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) is the ASHRAE 52.2 standard rating for air-filter particulate efficiency. MERV 1–4 captures only large particles like pet hair. MERV 5–8 (common 1-inch fiberglass filters) captures dust and pollen. MERV 9–12 captures finer particles like mold spores. MERV 13–16 captures bacteria and most virus-carrying droplets — but at significantly higher pressure drop. Hospital HEPA is rated separately above MERV 16.
Many Utah homeowners upgrade to MERV 13 thinking it helps with wildfire smoke and air quality — and it does. But on a standard 1-inch filter slot, MERV 13 can push your blower static pressure 0.2–0.4 iwc above design, cutting airflow and accelerating equipment wear. The fix is a 4 or 5-inch media cabinet that accommodates high-MERV without the pressure penalty.
Common Questions
What MERV rating is best for my Utah home?
MERV 11 on a 1-inch filter or MERV 13 on a 4-inch+ media cabinet is the typical sweet spot for Utah homes — good wildfire-smoke filtration without crushing the blower.
Should I use HEPA at home?
HEPA filters are too restrictive for residential central HVAC. A standalone HEPA room purifier in bedrooms is better than trying to force HEPA-level filtration through your central system.
Related Terms
Static Pressure
Static pressure is the resistance your blower has to push against to move air through the duct system — too high and the blower struggles, efficiency drops, and the system runs hot.
Ductwork
Ductwork is the metal or flexible tubing system that carries conditioned air from your furnace or air handler to each room and returns it for re-conditioning.
