The standard 1-inch furnace filter most homes use captures less than 20% of airborne particles and needs monthly replacement. A 4-5 inch media filter cabinet installed on your return duct captures 85%+ of dust, pollen, mold spores, bacteria, and pet dander — and lasts 6-12 months between changes. It's the single most impactful IAQ upgrade you can make.

The Details

What You Need to Know

MERV 13 media filters are 4-5 inches thick and use a dense pleated design that captures particles down to 0.3 microns — including fine dust, pollen, mold spores, bacteria, and even some viruses. Unlike 1-inch filters that restrict airflow when dirty, media filters have enough surface area to maintain proper airflow throughout their lifespan.

We install a filter cabinet directly on your return duct, sized for your system's airflow. The cabinet holds the media filter and includes a sealed door for easy access during changes. We verify that static pressure stays within manufacturer specifications after installation — a filter that restricts airflow does more harm than good.

For Utah homes, MERV 13 is the sweet spot. It captures the fine particulates that inversions and wildfire smoke bring, handles pet dander and dust mites, and doesn't require special equipment to handle the air resistance. Higher ratings (MERV 16+/HEPA) need dedicated fan systems and are typically only needed in medical-grade environments.

Got Questions?

Whole-Home Air Filtration FAQ

?What MERV rating should I use?
MERV 13 is the sweet spot for most homes — it captures bacteria-sized particles without restricting airflow. Higher ratings (MERV 16+/HEPA) require special equipment to handle the increased resistance. We'll verify your system can handle the filter you choose.
?How often do I change a 4-inch media filter?
Every 6-12 months depending on dust levels, pets, and how often your system runs. Much more convenient than monthly 1-inch filter changes. We'll set you up on a reminder schedule.
?Will a thicker filter restrict my airflow?
A properly sized media filter actually has more surface area than a 1-inch filter, so it flows better when both are new. We measure static pressure before and after installation to verify your system handles the upgrade correctly.
?How much does a media filter cabinet cost?
Filter cabinet installation (including first filter): $300-$600 depending on ductwork configuration. Replacement MERV 13 filters: $30-$60 each. It's one of the most affordable and impactful IAQ upgrades available.
?Can I upgrade to MERV 13 without a cabinet?
Only if your existing filter slot accommodates a 4-5 inch filter. Most standard 1-inch slots cannot physically hold a media filter and need a cabinet installed. Forcing a high-MERV 1-inch filter into a standard slot will restrict airflow and damage your system.
